One-Minute Why: The Brave Choice
THE CARD
Somewhere in today, someone in your home probably did a small brave thing. Maybe you owned up to a mistake. Maybe you tried the hard thing instead of the easy one. Maybe you spoke up when it would have been simpler to stay quiet, or stayed quiet when it would have been easier to show off.
This card takes exactly one minute. After any small brave choice today, stop and ask yourself — honestly — a gentle question. Not to judge the answer. Just to look at it.
“Why did I choose that — was it for the doing, or for who was watching?”
Both answers are allowed. A brave choice made partly for an audience is still a brave choice — this is not a test you can fail. The one-minute question just helps you notice the difference, which is where courage quietly grows a little humility. That braid — brave on the outside, honest on the inside — is the whole heart of this week’s Way of Life.
Three open prompts (pick one; no verdict)
● What made the choice feel hard in the first place — and what made you do it anyway?
● If nobody had been watching at all, would you have chosen the same thing?
● Did the good feeling afterward pop quickly, or settle in and stay? What does that tell you?
FOR THE GROWN-UP BY YOUR SIDE
Do your own One-Minute Why aloud first, and be honest if the answer is a little of both — that honesty is the gift. When a child hears a grown-up admit “I think I did it partly so people would see,” it makes the quiet, private kind of courage feel safe to reach for.
